I recently purchased the Dina Wakley class, Paint it Out from Interweave. This is a great class. I really enjoyed her step by step process.
Dina is great fun as a teacher. I love that she doesn't take things too seriously. It is so cool when she says, "It's just paper. We can buy more paper." I also love it that she ends up with paint on her hands and arm.
This is my first try at layering the way she suggested. I realized after the fact that I left out two layers. Oh well, I'll give those a shot later.
I really like how the yellow, green and pink peek through in different places. I loved using the exaggerated writing technique she used. It was very freeing to write with giant loopy letters and not care if anyone could read it.
It's like there are all kind of things hiding on my pages just waiting to be found!
The supplies I used are: three colors of acrylic paint plus white, baby wipes, a Lori homemade oval stencil, a Delta rectangles stencil and white and navy Stabilo All pencils. I also used a piece of plastic window screening as a stencil to make the tiny squares.

I'm back!! My stitches are out and I'm going to do exercises at home to get back in shape. I won't be doing heavy lifting for a while but I can paint!!!
I did these ATC before my surgery and now that I can type with two hands I want to enter them in the Craft Hoarders Anonymous Challenge.
The green background paper is from a paper pack I've been saving. I buy pretty paper and then don't want to use it for fear it will all be gone. I'm forcing myself to stop thinking that way. It does no good sitting in a drawer. The orange paper is some I saved from the recycle bin.
The characters & words are fabric from my co-workers stash of quilting fabric. A little detail trimming and some glitter glue and I've got some cute ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) for a swap I'm in with an online group called Tennessee Stampers.
As a Mixed Media artist I really enjoy using different materials in my art. I've always liked using fabric in my projects... even before I knew what a Mixed Media Artist was. Do you use fabric in your projects?

Lighting really does make a difference. I took the photo on the left inside and the one below outside on a cloudy afternoon. The one taken outside has much truer colors. Note to self... take photos outside whenever possible.
I'm glad this one is finished. I was a bit out of my element and it took some pondering to decide how to finish it. I was worried that I worked all the way to the edge and it would be hard to frame. Then it hit me, it can be mounted on mat board and then framed so I didn't have to cut it up and put it on canvas. I hope my friend likes it. I'm very pleased with it. Part of me wants to frame it and put it on my wall.

Paper, mat board, corrugated cardboard, gelli prints, craft foam, texture paste, paint, burlap, string, E6000 and Scotch Quick Dry glue were all used to make this piece. I just have one more thing to say....
I LOVE MIXED MEDIA!!!
I cut up piece of gelli prints and wove them on the page. Then I used a wash of gesso & paint. I used light dry wall spackle to make the ovals. Have no clue if they will crumble or not. The stuff is 5 years old. It was kind of soft so I could stamp into it which gave it some really cool texture. I used a several different stamps. Some were Hero Arts, Clear Snap & Penny Black.
This page was just playing with "stuff" I had. It's a little different for me and at one point it was soooo ugly. I'm so glad I've meet so many of you who say... "just keep adding layers." It really worked this time. A friend who does not have a Gelli Plate asked me what I did with all those prints. Today I cut them up and it was fun!!!

I'm fairly new to believing I'm an artist. I made a commitment to myself several months ago do something creative everyday. Most of the time I work in my art journal or my altered book. I'm very comfortable doing that. I've worked consistently for several months now and that work is paying off for me.
I've wanted to do a canvas for a while but I'm afraid. I don't know why a canvas is scary. It just a flat surface and I can gesso over it if I really screw it up. Today, I decided I wanted to do something a little larger than a book page. I really wanted to work on canvas but chickened out in the end. This is done in a "book" I recycled from a job years ago. I worked on it "as if" it was a canvas.
I began by painted the page with gesso. Then I used a light purple paint over the gesso leaving some white peaking through. I cut the vase from a page I'd taken out of my altered book. I folded the paper in half so that I could get my vase to be the same on both sides. I lightly painted the vase with a shade darker purple than my background. I gave it a couple coats. Finally I finger painted the stripes with a darker purple.
The flowers are cut from two Sizzix dies using chipboard. I gessoed them and then painted them with craft paints. After they were dry I peeled one of the chip board layers off the back of the flowers so they would not be too bulky in my book. I used a round brush to paint the greenery and stems and then arranged the flowers. Scotch Quick Dry Glue was used to attach the flowers. I used a Hero Arts background stamp for the text background in a purple and then in white. I used a black Stabilo Pencil around one side of the vase for a tiny shadow. The final touch was to outline the flowers with a white water based Sharpie Paint Marker.
I am amazed that I did this piece. I'm so pleased with my progress. I now believe that I can do a canvas. Thanks to all of you who visit my blog and encourage me. I treasure your comments. I appreciate your encouragement so much.
