Opportunity?

A Second on for Artist Play Room
This page gave me the opportunity to see something about myself as an artist.  I had to work a little harder because I'm not use to working with Gelli prints yet.  I had the flowers and butterflies down & it was a little blah for me.  My solution was to finger paint with gesso around he Gelli prints.

When it dried, I had no clue what I wanted to say on the page.  When in doubt use an alphabet had worked for me in the past so I thought I'd try it again.  As I reached for an old Stampin Up  set I saw a giant Just Rite rotary stamp.  That's what I needed.  As I moved the first band, it fell off in my hands.

This could have been a problem or an opportunity.  I had a choice.  Be irritated the band broke or use the band in a totally different way than it was made to be used.  That was my opportunity!  I was able to stamp the alphabet vertically with ease because the band fell off.

I'm finding I'm much more patient with myself my art, than I am about other parts of my life. The band broke...use it a different  way.  The white ink smeared when I put gel medium on it... oh well, hand write the word Opportunity.  This is a big change in me.  No kicking myself for screwing up.  Amazing.  I'm so glad that I chose to make this an opportunity.

  1. I love the vintage feel of this and the limited color scheme. I think the handwritten lettering is really appealing!!

    1. Thanks. I haven't worked with red in a while. It was fun using just three colors.

  2. I love the contrasting way in which you did your flowers and the way you took mishaps in the process of making the piece to your advantage. I believe the "opportunities" you described are the best way to grow as an artist, and this kind of situations can be applied to all areas of our lives. Blessings!

  3. cat is right, it hasa great vintage feeling. The alphabet around the flowers works perfectly and it's great that you've learned to be more patient with the artist you are. We all struggle with that one!

  4. It's a good way of thinking about yourself, in relation to your patience artistically compared to the rest of life. So often having that flash if insight into how to get over a problem produces something even better.
The red and black are so effective, and the way you used the alphabet letters. Great piece.

  5. Good for you! The more you allow yourself to be You...the less you'll want to kick!

  6. I am having a similar response to my "mistakes" and the visits from Serendipity. I have discovered that sometimes I can just throw something away. And... sometimes I have discovered that lemonade is the way to go. I think this is the heart of it, though, making art is the pilot light and the flame, NOT the result.

I love the feel of this, Boo, and I love the story. It makes me feel that much more connected and I really look forward to my weeks' visits with and from my friends here and elsewhere.

Thanks for the peek BEhind the curtain. You are so generous!!

  7. Fantastic page Boo. The colours, the patterns, your story with it. You are truly growing. I have the compost (Danny's book) but haven't yet the chance to spread it. Have a great weekend :0) Mo

  8. I think one of the reasons many of us pursuit art in its many forms is exactly because of these mistakes into opportunities experiences. Thank you for sharing yours. I really like your limited colour scheme and the graphic nature of your layout. Very eye catching.
